Jon Stanley scored the opening goal in the waning minutes of the second period. Brandon Anderson had the assist. St. Cloud out-shot the Bluejackets 31-24. Charlie Lenzmeier saved 21. Black lost 2-1 to Champlin Park on a late, power-play goal Jan. 21 at the National Hockey Center. Goalie Al Patten appeared to be screened on the game-winning play, which saw several Rebels stationed in front of the net. Sam Wood scored St. Cloud's lone goal, flipping in a rebound after he and Alex Jacques teamed up on a give-and-go scoring attempt.

When you're out-shot by a seven-to-one ratio, but give up just four goals, somebody must be doing something right. Jan. 20 that someone was goalie Charlie "Choo" Lenzmeier, who made 38 saves in Black's 4-2 loss to Centennial, The Cougars spent most of the game in the offensive zone at Centennial Sports Arena, trying to figure out how to get the puck past Lenzmeier. St. Cloud's skaters managed just six shots on goal. Black racked up 16 penalty minutes and lost its Fair Play point. Sam Wood scored a first-period, even-strength goal for St. Cloud on a pass from Isaak Blitvich. With the scored tied 1-1 in the second period, A.J. Jacques hustled up an unassisted, short-handed goal to give St. Cloud a 2-1 lead. The Cougars scored three, unanswered, even-strength goals to get the win.
St. Cloud Sweeps Sartell with 4-2 Win 1.19.07
Ben Honer scored twice to lead Black to a 4-2 win over Sartell Jan. 19 at the National Hockey Center. The second-year winger streaked past a Sartell defenseman, turned the corner and wristed it one-hole to open the scoring. Corey Wheelock then set up a Ryan Kissner goal that gave St. Cloud an early 2-0 lead. Sam Wood ran the score to 3-0 on a one-on-one, breakaway battle with a Sartell defenseman. Zach Siemers recorded an assist on the play. Sartell scored twice in the third period to make it a one-goal game. But Honer shut the door on the Sabres' rally, banging home a loose puck after a Wheelock-to-Kissner scoring attempt set off a scramble in front of the net. Goalies Al Patten and Charlie Lenzmeier split net-minding duties with each notching a scoreless period. The win completes a two-game sweep of the District 5 rival.

Black beat Sartell 6-0 Jan. 14 at NHC in its final Geyer Signal Center Ice Classic game. The team lost its three, round-robin games: 5-1 to Duluth East Saturday morning, 4-1 to Brooklyn Park Saturday afternoon and 4-0 Bloomington Jefferson Sunday morning. Goalie Al Patten made 29 saves, including a second-period lunge across the crease that nixed a likely backdoor goal. A.J. Jacques had two goals and an assist. Sam Wood had three assists. Isaak Blitvich had a power-play goal on a long feed from Ryan Kissner. Brandon Anderson knocked in a goal following a Hayden Courrier blast from the blue line. Zach Siemers scored, banging in a one-timer from the right circle.

A.J. Jacques scored on a Sam Wood feed with one second remaining to earn Black a 3-2 win Jan. 6 in Anoka. St. Cloud trailed the Tornadoes 2-1 in the third period when Shayn Goenner slapped home a Brandon Anderson pass to breathe life into Black. As the finals seconds ticked off Wood dug the puck free on the end boards and flipped it into the crease. The puck bounced through traffic in front of the net. Jacques backhanded it five-hole for the game winner. Corey Wheelock scored Black's first goal, unassisted. Anoka out-shot St. Cloud 26-12. Charlie Lenzmeier had 24 saves.

Black lost 2-1 to Red in an SCYHA Pee Wee A rivalry game Jan. 4 at Ritsche Arena. Al Patten's superb netminding blunted several quality shots by Red, keeping the score in check. Patten made 20 saves. The White line of A. J. Jacques, Zach Siemers and Sam Wood combined for five goals to lead Black to a 5-4 win Dec. 31 in Alexandria. The defensive corps of Dylan Jaeger, Hayden Courrier, Michael Kerber and Isaak Blitvich created neutral-ice turnovers that fed tape-to-tape scoring plays. Wood notched four goals. St. Cloud's penalties and poor checking helped Blaine break open a close game and beat Black 5-1 Dec. 30 at Torrey Arena. St. Cloud out-shot the Bengals 22-17, but took 10 minutes in penalties. A. J. Jacques scored the lone goal following a Hayden Courrier blast from the point. Al Patten manned the net for St. Cloud, making 12 saves.

An Alex Jacques goal with 1:13 remaining earned Black a 1-1 tie with Andover Dec. 28 at Andover Community Center. For the third time in four games Black summoned a win or tie with a late goal. Jacques scored from the left circle on a pass from Sam Wood. Zach Siemers was also credited with an assist. Goalie Charlie Lenzmeier kept his team in the game, stopping 19 shots. A Sam Wood hat trick -- including a goal with 22 seconds remaining -- powered Black to 4-3 victory over Cambridge-Isanti (C-I) Dec. 22 at the MAC. Snappy breakout passing and improved line play helped St. Cloud earn its first District 10 win of the season. Zach Siemers assisted on two of Wood's goals, including the game winner. Defenseman Hayden Courrier notched a helper on the other Wood tally. Forward Ben Honer scored unassisted. Charlie Lenzmeier had 22 saves. C-I goalie Billy Winselman, a cousin to SCYHA's Mavetz brothers, had 21 saves.

First-period penalties and a lack of offense doomed Black to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of its sister team Dec. 19 at Torrey Arena. Pee Wee A Red advances to 3-2-2 in District 10 play. Black falls to 0-6-1. Ryan Kissner scored a second period power-play goal for Black to avert the shutout. Assisting on the play were Dylan Jaeger and Ben Honer. Goalie Charlie Lenzmeier saved 24. Black managed seven shots on goal, including just two in the final period. The rematch is Jan. 4 at Ritsche Arena.
Black Ties Ranked Rogers Team 12.17.06
Sam Wood scored on an A.J. Jacques feed with two seconds remaining to clinch a 1-1 tie with league-leading Rogers Dec. 17 at Princeton Ice Arena. The tie, coupled with just four penalty minutes and a 5-on-3 penalty kill, made for a highly successful outing. Goalie Al Patten and a quartet of steadfast defenseman -- Michael Kerber, Isaak Blitvich, Zak Schermerhorn and Hayden Courrier -- kept the Royals off the scoreboard save for one even-strength goal. Patten recorded 34 saves. Rogers was ranked in the Let's Play Hockey's Warrior Hockey Rankings and the Minnesota Hockey Journal's Coaches' Poll.
Centennial Beats Black 5-1 12.16.06
Brandon Anderson scored Black's lone goal Dec. 16 in a 5-1 loss to District 10 powerhouse Centennial. Back after a one-game absence due to a shoulder injury, Anderson fought his way across the face of the goal and backhanded a puck into the net with a Cougar defender hanging on him. Black excited fans at the National Hockey Center by killing off a 5-on-3 situation. Crisp, tape-to-tape breakout passes and timely D-to-D passing were evidence of continued improvement. Centennial outshot St. Cloud 41-14.
Black Drops Close One at Home 12.15.06
Black lost 1-0 to the Fargo Angels Dec. 15 at the National Hockey Center. Goalies Charlie Lenzmeier and Al Patten teamed up to hold the visitors scoreless until the third period. Tournament Sparks Offense 12.10.06
Black retrieved its offense from the lost-and-found Dec. 8-10, scoring four goals in a two-game span at the Spirit of Duluth Hockey Tournament. That total surpassed the combined offensive output of the four previous games. Black was eliminated in the round-robin portion of the tournament, losing 8-0 to the Duluth Lakers, 9-3 to Chaska and 10-1 to the Wisconsin Fire. Goalies Al Patten and Charlie Lenzmeier faced 167 shots on goal, an average of nearly 56 per game.
Round 2 Goes Better With Elk River 12.6.06
Black earned some road respect Dec. 6 at the Barn, limiting Elk River to three goals in a 3-0 District 10 rematch. The Elks iced the puck three times in the second period to escape Black's improving forecheck. But six penalties -- totaling 20 player minutes -- hampered St. Cloud's offense. Black lost 7-2 to Maple Grove Nov. 8 in a game marred by 11 penalties, including an unsportsmanlike minor on St. Cloud. The game began on a high note at Osseo Arena with three St. Cloud shots on goal in the first 16 seconds, the last of which went in, unassisted, for Ryan Kissner.
